It seems like every 5 seconds some entrepreneur is just around the corner with another Digg or <a href="http://del.icio.us" title="http://del.icio.us" target="_blank">del.icio.us</a> knockoff.<br/><br/>Hoping that whatever maneuver they can bring to the table will make them this week&#8217;s hot topic or at least clever enough to catch the eye of whomever might have some money and want to absorb some wicked bit of code or an entire social media community.<br/><br/>Social media (or new media) involves a LOT of things, a lot of tech, and could need a lot of resources (not necessarily money). When you say you do social media, and you want to launch a network of some sort, does that mean the entire process is done in-house?<br/><br/>Social media marketing can bring traffic and links to any website. Too often, marketers overlook the value of social media and tend to stick with traditional methods, while the younger generation of webpreneurs has employed social sites as an every-day strategy.<br/><br/>Social media is gowing at a such a rate that domains, websites and blogsites will increase in value due to the increased demand for webspace. The social aspect is driving the net into new territory and expands exponentially because of its viral nature.<br/><br/>Social media &#8211; as understood in a Web 2.0 context and has enabled us to play more effectively than was practical previously, on a global field.<br/><br/>Social Media has released us, freed us: and we won&#8217;t go back. Social media has been a great resource for both ideas and traffic for my blog. If you work and get noticed in social media and it gets passed around that&#8217;s a great way to promote your work.<br/><br/>Social media seek&#8217;s (in theory and in word, at least) a different kind of influence: peer review and approval. The medium and the form of discourse that it supports are wide open.<br/><br/>Social Media is a Branding Exercise &#8211; while social media sites can send you a lot of traffic very very quickly they can also be excellent places to do branding. Every time a reader or potential reader comes across you on a social media site the more you reinforce your brand.<br/><br/>Social media marketing is actually becoming necessary but it has to be done right. It is about the weight of numbers and it will bring some honesty, ethics and accountability back to doing business.<br/><br/>Social Media is conversational media in all its interactive forms including text, video and spoken words &#8211; whether face to face, over the Internet, over the airwaves or via mobile technologies such as iPods and cell phones.<br/><br/>A Social Media Club is intended to be a place where amateurs and professionals can come together to learn from one another, to understand each other and to work together on the things that make meaning in their lives &#8211; their personal passions, their professional endeavours and their noble pursuits.<br/><br/>Social Media, doesn&#8217;t even really exist as a subset of media. Everything is social now, we just expect it. Social media companies will race to provide metrics that show impressive results, but that&#8217;s not necessarily a good thing, especially given the ways measurement may shape investment and in turn shape the evolution of social mediums.<br/><br/>Social media campaign&#8217;s go far beyond the traditional agency model of media planning and buying. So do advertisers they actually get into the game and get their campaign&#8217;s out there.<br/><br/>Social media is changing the way online businesses advertise because control of the message is shifting to the consumer.<br/><br/>Social Media Optimization (SMO) is a new term that was recently coined by Rohit Bhargava and has since been taking on life of its own. SMO tactics can drive huge amounts of people to a website and can also determine whether a startup, website or idea will make it or not.<br/><br/>Social media will be the optimal place to market especially with a recession. Instead of cringing at the idea of relinquishing control to social media outlets, smart executives realize that there is more benefit in joining the conversation than fighting it. Instead of controlling information about your brand, your social media strategy should be about engagement.<br/><br/>Advertising as we know it is expensive; social media is cheap. For this reason, the recession is bad news for traditional marketers, while the same environment is full of opportunities for social media marketers. Setting up a company blog or a Facebook page is significantly less expensive than traditional marketing. Even creating your own community web site can be significantly cheaper than traditional advertising campaigns.<br/><br/>Social media marketing is not without risk. While every company wants to generate buzz, online backlash can be vicious. Recently a Motrin commercial aimed at moms created quite a stir. You can view the ad on YouTube as did another 210,000 people. The ad makes the apparently condescending claim that carrying babies in a sling is a painful experience for moms. According to moms, the ad was wrong and they made it loud and clear through social media applications such as Twitter. Some moms found the Motrin ad outright offensive, and they were quite vocal about it. You can catch them on YouTube. Of course, the disaster doesn&#8217;t end there. It continues on a myriad of blogs, and carries on in a Facebook page dedicated to boycotting Motrin. The backlash ad on YouTube can be viewed.<br/><br/>What to do when your target rejects your ad? Turn to social media. Instead of rejecting the market reaction Johnson &amp; Johnson could have used social media applications to learn about their market prior to creating and publishing the controversial ad. There could have been a Facebook page created to learn about young moms and pain. There could have been a blog inviting moms to provide video testimonials on YouTube. The lesson learned in this case is to use social media to learn about your market, or be prepared to be taught very quickly and painfully.<br/><br/>Reduce your expenses<br/><br/>Save time and money on travel and use LinkedIn to network. Instead of driving to the other end of town fighting your way through traffic use the largest business social network to build new connections and to nurture existing ones. Only attend your most valuable networking events, and transfer as much of your networking as you can to the web. LinkedIn, Plaxo, and Facebook are some of the best social networking applications.<br/><br/>Reduce your legal fees through a fairly new social media site called Docstoc. It is a place to find and share professional documents such as contracts, confidentiality agreements, intellectual property documents and more. Docstoc is a social community resource that enables anyone to find and share professional documents. The site provides an opportunity for individuals and organizations to share their professional documents. Documents available on Docstoc can be easily searched, previewed and downloaded for free.<br/><br/>Decrease your recruiting costs as you hire your employees though Craigslist, which has quietly become one of the most visited websites in cyberspace. It offers a much cheaper way to recruit online, and your company can expect excellent response rates for your job posts.<br/><br/>Putting it all together<br/><br/>Are more companies turning to social media in this economy? They should if they want to improve their marketing efficiencies, enhance their customer service experience, or develop their research techniques. Social media allows companies to engage with the customers instead of shouting about their own wonderfulness. It offers ways to business to partner with the community in an effort to develop a better product. In the end everybody wins because both the company and the consumer end up with a better product.<br/><br/>Virtually all companies can benefit from using social media not just to create awareness, but also to become part of the conversation. Managing your corporate reputation is impossible without social media, and ignoring it can be outright devastating. <div><em><strong>Frank Tocco</strong> asked: </em><br/><br/><br/>Generating a buzz to get massive amounts of traffic to your website is best done using social media websites?<br/><br/>The easiest way to accomplish this is to leverage the clout of influencers within the social media community.<br/><br/>Influencers are people within a social network that are respected and liked by others in that community and are able to popularize discussions on topics of interst in that community. <br/><br/>Influencers stimulate the conversations, connect people to ideas and can capture the mindshare or opinion of an audience within a social sphere. All social media websites have a few select individuals who stand out for their activity within the community and their expertise has gained the trust and support of the social media users.<br/><br/>These are the people you are are looking for and the ones you want to influence.<br/><br/>There are so many social media sites and the points we make in this article can be applied to any of them. We&#8217;ll be studying how to develope your own strategy for targeting the influencers of these sites to engage  their social network with your content.<br/><br/>Let&#8217;s look at a social news site like Digg for example. Digg and other sites like it allow the audience to vote on the value of content with a simple thumbs up and thumbs down vote. By actively participating in the community you can develope a following and become and authority and with that comes influence.<br/><br/>Over time supporters will share your content with friends or add it to their websites and blogs. Social media users can be pitched just like a blogger or writer can be pitched with a simple introduction at first gradually building a relationship that&#8217;s mutually benefitial. The goal is to leverage their brand of influence by influencing them to promote your website content within their community.<br/><br/>The main steps are Targeting, Networking and then Pitching the influencer in question.<br/><br/><strong>1.Targeting<br/><br/></strong>Finding a social media influencer that shares your point of view about your content and is relevent to their website or sphere of influence is most important. Making your content in-line or coherent with the influencers interests makes it much easier to get them to promote or agree with your content.<br/><br/>Go to the public user ranking list of the social media site in question, in this case Digg, and visit each profile on the listed looking for who has influence and also who resonates with what you&#8217;re promoting. Get a feel for what interests them. You can also do a keyword search on the social media site looking for content based on your keywords and find the users that rank high within the site on those keywords. If they have consistently submitted content around those keywords they are likely to be open to suggestions of simular content. You can also do a URL search of your keywords to find people that may be open to more content of that type.<br/><br/>Using the site yourself will help you discover little details about the user you&#8217;re targeting that can help you reach them and develope rapport. For example, while top Digg user MrBabyMan submits a great amount of stories, most active Diggers are familiar with his avid interest in <a href="http://Cracked.com" title="http://Cracked.com" target="_blank">Cracked.com</a>, a popular pop culture/men’s portal/magazine.<br/><br/><strong>2. Networking<br/><br/></strong>After you&#8217;re done targeting a specific social media website you need to contact them and develpoe a relationship. You can get in touch with them from their contact info in their user profile and join the site as a registered user. If contact info is not available Google them by their name and user name to see if you can find it elsewhere. Look for their blog or other profiles they may have listed on other sites.<br/><br/>Once you have their contact details initiate a conversation by just send them a note and thank them for their contributions. Trying to pitch to promote your content right away is very bad etiquette and annoying. You can stand out from the crowd of self-interested crowd by genuinely showing your appreciation for their contributions.<br/><br/>Take a genuine interest in them and engage them in a dialog of common interests and do so continuously until you have a good idea what material they would support and do favors for the user by giving them publicity or links to free resources and interesting content (not your own).<br/><br/>Real social media users are always interested in buzz-worthy news or opinions that can boost their own authority within the social media community. Your content or anything else you offer should not only meet the integrity of their personal brand, but it should improve it and the reputation of the user within the community.<br/><br/>Offer them free invites to unrelated websites, give away exclusive information on certain topics. Share some links to excellent websites. Do little favors without asking for anything in return at all. Give them a reason to be interested in you.<br/><br/>Networking is really just about making friends. It’s that simple. This will gradually lead you into the third and final stage: Pitching the influencer.<br/><br/><strong>3.Pitching</strong><br/><br/>So now that you&#8217;ve built a rapport with this person what next?<br/><br/>A. Ask Casually. Do your pitching in a light hearted and casual manner and do not<br/><br/>aggressively push the user to promote your content. This is a huge turnoff and<br/><br/>you should understand that the user has a perfect right to refuse you.<br/><br/>B. Disclose Your affiliation. I would recommend letting the user know that you<br/><br/>are affiliated with the specific website, particularly if you plan to have a long<br/><br/>working relationship with the user. He or she will appreciate your honesty and it<br/><br/>will also make it easier for you to ask the second time round.<br/><br/>C. Space out your pitches. The biggest mistake you can make is to ask the influencer<br/><br/>to promote every single piece of content that comes out on your site. This is a major<br/><br/>irritant so only offer the user your best work, while pitching your material only once<br/><br/>per week or every two weeks.<br/><br/>Continue to keep aclose contact after they are promoting your site. <div><em><strong>Barry Byers</strong> asked: </em><br/><br/><br/>At a social media marketing training session I recently attended, I overheard another attendee talking about the challenges she faced in attempting to tackle social media marketing. The owner of a small, home-based business based in the Toronto area, she was trying to find inexpensive ways to market her business. She had heard about this new way of promoting her company and decided to jump in with both feet. After a few months, she felt completely overwhelmed and decided that she needed training in social media marketing.<br/><br/>She is likely not alone. The temptation to take advantage of the virtually free marketing opportunities in social media is pretty strong, but without an effective plan, you will find yourself in the same position as that Toronto business owner.<br/><br/>Social Media Marketing &#8211; Why So Much Choice Can Be a Bad Thing<br/><br/>There are many kinds of sites that fall under the heading of &#8220;social media.&#8221; These include social networking sites like Facebook and LinkedIn, social news sites like Digg and Reddit, and social bookmarking sites like Delicious. Social media also includes the &#8220;microblogging&#8221; site, Twitter.<br/><br/>The key to using social media for marketing is to offer people something of value so they will want to connect and interact with your business. For most businesses, this thing of value is a blog, series of articles, or other content of interest to their core audience.<br/><br/>Here&#8217;s where it gets tricky, and where our Toronto business owner got tripped up &#8211; deciding which social media sites to use and what kind of content to create.<br/><br/>When I heard that business owner talk about her challenges, I entered the conversation to see what she had bee trying. Here&#8217;s a summary of what she said:<br/><br/> She started a blog but after a month or so had run out of things to talk about.<br/><br/> Everytime she posted to her blog, she would add a link to the post on Digg and Delicious.<br/><br/> She had also investigated Reddit and Stumble Upon and set up accounts on both sites but left them pretty much inactive.<br/><br/> She set up a profile on Linked In, at the suggestion of a client, but promptly forgot about it and rarely used it.<br/><br/> She added a personal profile to Facebook but, beyond that, had no idea how to use this profile to promote her business. She eventually found a way to create a business page, which seemed to suit her needs.<br/><br/> She just recently joined Twitter and was having trouble keeping up with it and finding things to say.<br/><br/>After listening to her, I concluded that the main problem she was having was content-based and I reassured her that the social media marketing training course would help her.<br/><br/>What she needed was a comprehensive plan to get her started. She needed to focus her efforts on a few sites, and ensure she had content to share. She needed a schedule for her writing and she also needed to learn how to optimize her content to draw the traffic she wanted.<br/><br/>Fortunately, the social media training course we were both attending covered all of those points and more.<br/><br/>I spoke to her at the end of the course and she said she felt much better, and much more ready to tackle social media marketing. Promoting these sites across the internet has in the past involved everything from search engine optimization to paid keyword referrals to link popularity campaigns. However, one of the most effective and relatively new methods to promote content-rich web sites these days, is through social media promotion.<br/><br/>What is &#8220;social media promotion&#8221; you ask? Simply, as defined by Wikipedia, social media:<br/><br/>&#8220;describes the online technologies and practices that people use to share opinions, insights, experiences, and perspectives with each other.&#8221;<br/><br/>Part of the Web 2.0 revolution; another catchphrase describing the new generation of web sites that have users that submit their own text, video and picture content; social media promotion can take many forms.<br/><br/>Usually, these technologies and practices take non-search engine forms and can involve such technologies as chat forums, message boards, blogs, podcasts, and wikis. Simply, social media can be considered ANYTHING that you can use to build a community to rally around. A well-run social media campaign can drive huge amounts of traffic to a website and can determine whether a new idea, website or startup ultimately takes off or not.<br/><br/>There are literally dozens of social media sites active across the internet today. Below are brief overviews of what I would consider the five most popular:<br/><br/>Digg (<a href="http://www.digg.com" title="http://www.digg.com" target="_blank">www.digg.com</a>) the big boy of social media sites. Digg was formed initially with a tech focus and is still the end all for all tech or computer specific content items that you wish to pull across to the masses. Digg has however become so popular that its scope has now expanded to cover most any item of interest.<br/><br/>del.icio.us (<a href="http://del.icio.us/" title="http://del.icio.us/" target="_blank">del.icio.us/</a>) a close second to Digg in the area of backlink generation. The primary purpose of <a href="http://del.icio.us" title="http://del.icio.us" target="_blank">del.icio.us</a> is to store your bookmarks online; in that regard, it&#8217;s actually more community-focused then Digg. The ability to store your bookmarks online and add more from anyplace in the world, actually encourages cross-linking among site members who share similar interests. This in turn allows you to promote your own content to a shared community with similar interests, generating those much needed backlinks for site promotional purposes.<br/><br/>Technorati (<a href="http://www.technorati.com" title="http://www.technorati.com" target="_blank">www.technorati.com</a>) the recognized authority on what is going in the world of weblogs. The main strength of Technocrati is the ability to keep tabs on your online visibility.
